I think this is our domain of concern, to help these tertiary students get back into their study. I am obviously very passionate about this topic.

I believe tertiary studies are just as important and valuable as work, for rehabilitation. With regards to returning clients to roles, values, providing purpose, integrating clients back into the community and ultimately rehabilitating our clients so they can return to all their previous occuaptions that they value, whether it is work or study.

Do you all agree with me? What haven't I considered?

  1. Awesome topic Rachael! something had never really even thought of... I agree with you completely I don't think I have ever heard of OT's working with tertiary students it must be such a large group of people who need the help and are missing out.

  2. I agree with you Rachael - am not sure if your heading relates back to the argument underneath as neatly as I would like, and you've kind of said this in the last post.
As I am someone who struggles with health issues - continuing with study has been really difficult at times over the last few years. I am not sure how I would access an OT, which would be great! I suppose I could talk to myself...ha ha!

  3. Hey Rach,

Great blog and great concept - good on you for using your experience to try and better others!

After my brain surgery, I still had a trimester of uni to go and the closest thing I got to vocational support was WINZ suggesting I attend one of their meetings about getting back to work (I was working summer holidays at the time) aimed at dole bludgers.
Getting back to uni however and completing my degree was still a huge part of my rehabilitation and I would be very supportive of a health system that recognized the need to support students - given that we recognize students as 'employed' in our employment statistics, why treat study as second rate?

We need people with a range of backgrounds (health / disability or otherwise) to continue to come through our education system - it adds a richness to our society.

Best of luck with your blog :)

  4. So true Rachael, it would benefit everyone to support those with injuries or disabilties in gaining tertiary qualifications, and possibly open new job opportunities for occupational therapists :)
